We will pick you up from your port and take you in comfort to Ephesus, where a spectacular and memorable day awaits you. Throughout your tour your professional guide will provide full information about what you are seeing, bringing the city to life for you and answering your questions. You will enjoy a comprehensive tour of this ancient city, during which you will see Hadrian’s, Trajan’s and the Domitian’s Temples; the huge Roman bath; Harbor Street; the Marble Street; the Gates of Mihridates and Mazues; Commercial Agora (market place); Latrina; the Scolastica Baths; Curetes Street; Polio Fountain; Memnius Monument; the Prytaneion; the Odeon; the Satet Agora; the Celcus Library; and the biggest amphitheater in Turkey
Leaving the main site, we travel about a mile to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis, otherwise known as Artemision. Artemis was the main goddess of the pre-Christian Ephesians who built the biggest temple ever dedicated to her.
After marvelling at the remains of the temple, we drive the short distance to the small town of Selçuk to visit the Basilica of Saint John, which was constructed in the sixth century AD by the Emperor Justinian. The Basilica is believed to contain the tomb of Saint John the Apostle, evangelist and prophet, author of the Fourth Gospel and the Book of Revelation. The Basilica has magnificent views over the whole of Ephesus valley and, between May and August you will see majestic storks soaring in the thermal air currents and nesting on the tops of columns.
Having enjoyed our lunch we now drive into the hills for four miles to the House of the Virgin Mary, where it is believed that the mother of Jesus spent the last years of her life. This is a place of peace, sacred to both Muslims and Christians. Its many pilgrims have included Pope Paul V and John Paul II. Pope Benedict XVI celebrated mass here in November 2006.
After our visit to Mary’s House we will return you to your port at least 45 minutes before the scheduled departure of your ship.
